Johnny Depp’s Role as Glen Lantz in A Nightmare on Elm Street
Who did Johnny Depp play in A Nightmare on Elm Street? Explore Glen Lantz, Depp's 1984 film debut and his most memorable scene.
Johnny Depp’s Role as Glen Lantz in A Nightmare on Elm Street
Johnny Depp made his feature-film debut in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), playing Glen Lantz, Nancy Thompson's boyfriend. He does not play Freddy Krueger. Glen's role is remembered for his relationship with Nancy and for one of the film's most startling effects sequences. This guide focuses on that early credit rather than Depp's later career.
Who Glen is in the story
Glen is a teenager caught up in Nancy's effort to understand terrifying dreams and the danger facing their friends. His skepticism and desire to help make him more than a background character. The film uses the contrast between ordinary high-school routines and nightmarish events to make the threat feel unpredictable.
Why the part matters to Depp's career
A Nightmare on Elm Street was released in 1984, well before Depp's leading-man roles made him a household name. Glen remains a distinctive early screen appearance. Searches sometimes attach Depp to the 2010 remake or later Freddy films, but the relevant film for this character is the original directed by Wes Craven.
The bedroom scene — major spoilers
Glen falls asleep despite the danger the characters have been discussing. The famous sequence turns his bedroom into the site of an extreme practical-effects nightmare. Its impact depends on the reversal of a supposedly safe domestic space, not on a complicated subplot about the actor's identity.
Cast distinctions
Heather Langenkamp plays Nancy Thompson, while Robert Englund plays Freddy Krueger in the 1984 film. Glen is an important supporting role in that cast. By contrast, the 2010 remake has Rooney Mara as Nancy Holbrook and Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy, with no reason to assign Depp's original credit to the later movie.
