Grafted Scion Boss Guide: The Opening Encounter and Rematch
Find out how the Grafted Scion fight works, how to survive its combos and what happens if you lose early.

Grafted Scion Boss Guide: The Opening Encounter and Rematch
The Grafted Scion is the multi-limbed creature many players meet at the start of Elden Ring. Defeat is common in that opening sequence, but it is possible to win—and the game later provides another opportunity to face the enemy with better equipment. Mild spoilers: the rematch route is discussed below.
What makes the opening encounter hard
The Scion strings several weapon swings together, covering more space than its body language first suggests. A single successful dodge does not mean the attack chain has ended. Wait to see the final recovery before moving into range, and use the arena to avoid getting trapped at an edge. The goal is to identify the actual end of a combo, not to challenge each individual arm swing.
Make each attempt teach one reaction
Start by learning how far one multihit sequence travels. Dodge toward a useful angle rather than retreating blindly. After it commits to an attack and stops, choose a fast punish and recover stamina. If you enter with a low-health starting class, accept that some openings are too risky for a heavy attack. A clean, short punish is progress.
Returning for a rematch
The Four Belfries area in Liurnia includes a portal route back toward the Chapel of Anticipation. Check that you activate the correct portal before spending a key. The later fight gives you access to equipment, upgrades, and a character build that were unavailable in the introduction. Confirm any specific reward details against the version you're playing rather than confusing the Scion with unrelated grafted enemies.
Should you restart because you lost?
No. Losing the prologue fight does not prevent you from progressing through Elden Ring. You can continue into Limgrave and build strength naturally. Restart only if you personally want to challenge the encounter from a fresh beginning—not because the game has locked away its main path.
Should you build around the rematch?
Not necessarily. The Grafted Scion rematch is a satisfying optional goal, but you can reach meaningful parts of the game without planning every level around it. Return when you have a weapon you trust and a good grasp of how multihit attacks end. If you are interested in specific rewards, check the Chapel encounter rather than the drops of other grafted creatures; names alone do not determine loot.
