A biography of Hersha Parady, who played Alice Garvey on Little House on the Prairie, with verified career and legacy details.
Hersha Parady: The Actress Behind Alice Garvey
Hersha Parady played Alice Garvey on Little House on the Prairie, a recurring character closely connected to the Garvey family storyline. The actress died in August 2023 at age 78. Her portrayal is remembered for bringing warmth and emotional stakes to Walnut Grove rather than for serving as the show's central lead.
The role of Alice Garvey
Alice was married to Jonathan Garvey, portrayed by Merlin Olsen, and was the mother of Andy Garvey. The Garveys arrived as a recurring family whose stories intersected with the Ingalls household. Parady's screen presence made Alice an important figure in the show's supporting ensemble.
Confusion sometimes arises between Alice Garvey, Caroline Ingalls and the actresses who portrayed them. Karen Grassle played Caroline. Parady's Alice was a separate character whose arc ended before the final season of the series.
A storyline remembered for its tragedy
Alice died in the dramatic 1980 episode May We Make Them Proud, set around a fire at the school for the blind. The fictional death had a lasting impact on the character's family and on viewers, in part because the show often balanced domestic warmth with sudden tragedy.
The fictional character's death in 1980 should never be confused with the actress's real-life death decades later. Search snippets can place both dates next to one another, making it especially important to label each event clearly.
Parady’s career outside Walnut Grove
Parady also appeared in television series such as Mannix and The Waltons. Before playing Alice she appeared in a different Little House part, Eliza, during season three. That earlier guest appearance helps explain why a comprehensive episode cast list may show her name before the Garvey family's arrival.
After the series, she had selected television credits, including an appearance on Kenan & Kel in the late 1990s. She did not have the same long-term celebrity visibility as some of the original Ingalls family cast, but she remained strongly associated with Alice.
Her death and television legacy
Parady died on August 23, 2023, after a period of illness, according to reporting that cited her family. News accounts described complications following treatment for a brain tumor. The respectful emphasis in a career profile is on the performer and her documented work rather than speculation about private medical details.
