iPhone 16 Camera Specs and Features
UPDATED NOVEMBER 1, 2026 · US ENGLISH · RESEARCH-BASED GUIDE
The regular iPhone 16 has two rear camera modules: a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 12MP Ultra Wide. It can also provide a 2x optical-quality framing option using the Main sensor. This is not the same camera array as iPhone 16 Pro, which adds a dedicated telephoto module and different professional controls. This guide is a technical feature reference for the standard 2024 iPhone 16.

At a glance
| Module | What it does |
| 48MP Fusion Main | General photography, 24MP/48MP output modes |
| 2x Main crop | 12MP optical-quality telephoto-like framing |
| 12MP Ultra Wide | Wide scenes and macro capability |
| Camera Control | Dedicated physical interaction for camera adjustments |
| Video | 4K Dolby Vision up to 60 fps; Cinematic and Action modes |
| Image formats | HEIF and JPEG; supported Apple image processing |
The Main camera is more versatile than “48MP” suggests
The Fusion Main camera can use information from its high-resolution sensor for different photo output choices, including 24MP and 48MP images. A 2x crop gives a tighter view without an additional long lens. For portraits or people across a table, that crop can be convenient. The 48MP figure is sensor resolution, however, not a guarantee that every photo has perfect detail.
Why the Ultra Wide matters
The Ultra Wide lets you fit more of a scene into the frame, helpful in small rooms and for city architecture. Its macro features also support close-up subjects. At a given point, stepping physically backward can sometimes be better than using an Ultra Wide because perspective changes. Use the lens that produces the composition you want, rather than treating one as universally higher quality.
Video formats and controls
Apple specifies up to 4K Dolby Vision recording at 60 fps on the iPhone 16, alongside Cinematic and Action modes. Camera Control provides a dedicated way to open or adjust camera functions. Choose video settings based on your intended playback, available light and storage. Higher frame rate or resolution can require more space and does not replace good audio or stable composition.
When to consider the 16 Pro instead
The regular 16 does not have the Pro model's dedicated 5x telephoto hardware or full professional video workflow. Those are meaningful differences for distant subjects and certain productions. For family pictures, travel and everyday video, the standard dual-camera system covers many situations. If you're debating models rather than a camera feature, use a separate product comparison to avoid confusing camera specifications with purchasing advice.
