Marge in IT: Welcome to Derry: Character and Richie Link

Who plays Marge in Welcome to Derry? Explore Marge Truman, her friendship arc, and the major Richie Tozier connection in Season 1.

Marge in IT: Welcome to Derry: Character and Richie Link

Marge Truman, played by Matilda Lawler, is one of the young people at the center of IT: Welcome to Derry's 1962 storyline. She is a friend of Lilly Bainbridge and becomes emotionally close to Rich Santos. The series finale reveals why she also matters to the later IT films: she will become Richie Tozier's mother. That last detail is a Season 1 spoiler, so new viewers should stop before the section marked below.

Who plays Marge in Welcome to Derry?

Matilda Lawler portrays Marge, a teenager whose friendships place her increasingly close to Derry's supernatural crisis. She is not Beverly Marsh, and her surname in the 1962 story is not Tozier. The distinction matters because a major future-family twist changes how fans read earlier scenes without changing the character's identity at the beginning of the story.

Marge's importance is not reducible to being related to somebody in another movie. During the season, she participates in the children's investigation and reacts to danger alongside friends who sometimes disagree about how much they can trust one another. Her choices give the story a point of view rooted in loyalty and fear rather than in military strategy or adult authority.

Her friendship with Lilly and the other children

The group's relationships are tested by Pennywise's ability to exploit anxiety and uncertainty. Marge belongs to the same vulnerable community as Lilly, Ronnie and the other kids, but each responds differently. Friendship offers an alternative to the secrecy of the adults: the children exchange observations and act even when the town dismisses what they have seen.

The value of Marge as a character comes from that process. She is allowed to make mistakes and feel frightened, yet continues to participate when the danger becomes much larger than an ordinary childhood mystery. Describing her only as 'Richie's mom' misses the dramatic role she has in the 1962 storyline.

Spoilers: is Marge related to Richie Tozier?

Yes. In “Winter Fire,” Pennywise reveals that Marge will one day be Richie Tozier's mother and shows her an image of the future Losers' Club member. The reveal gives the creature a reason to target her: Richie will be involved in defeating it. The sequence makes Marge's future family part of the conflict while showing how the creature experiences time differently from the human characters.

This link is an intentional connection between the HBO series and Andy Muschietti's films. The creative team discussed the Marge/Richie bloodline as a foundational idea for joining the stories. The finale also uses Beverly Marsh in a separate epilogue connection; those revelations are not interchangeable.

Marge Truman, Rich Santos and Richie Tozier: three different people

Marge's relationship with Rich Santos is emotional and immediate in 1962. Rich Santos is a boy in the Welcome to Derry story, portrayed by Arian S. Cartaya. Richie Tozier, by contrast, belongs to a later generation and is known from the Losers' Club in IT. Similar names and the finale's family reveal can create confusion, but the show never says Rich Santos secretly grows up to become Richie Tozier.

Rich's sacrifice gives the name connection special poignancy. Viewers may reasonably interpret that connection as an act of remembrance. A character interpretation should be presented as one, though, rather than a fully documented offscreen explanation of every future family decision.

What Marge's ending means

The finale places her among the children who help complete the task of containing Pennywise. Survival does not mean she now knows everything that will happen to her in later decades. Her immediate victory, future connection to Richie, and experiences of loss coexist. The show lets a child from the prequel matter on her own terms while supplying a meaningful bridge to the films.
