Matter Smart Home News: Standard Updates, Thread and Device Support
Research snapshot: November 1, 2026 | Topic: matter smart home news
Matter 1.5.1, announced by the Connectivity Standards Alliance on March 31, 2026, refined camera and doorbell capabilities introduced in Matter 1.5. The changes matter for interoperable smart-home devices, but a specification update does not immediately upgrade every camera or hub. Buyers still need to check product certification, firmware and supported features.

What changed in Matter 1.5.1?
The alliance's March release describes improvements to multi-stream video/audio delivery, media interoperability, camera recording configuration, and flexibility for different installations. It also addresses related device types such as chimes and intercoms. The specification can make it easier for manufacturers to deliver a consistent experience across ecosystems; the manufacturer has to implement and test that support.
| Capability | Practical meaning | What it does not guarantee |
| Multi-stream video | Multiple viewers or services can make better use of suitable camera streams. | An old camera automatically gains simultaneous streams. |
| Recording and media improvements | More robust configurations for storage and streaming workflows. | Every platform offers the same recordings or subscription terms. |
| Camera control refinements | More flexible behavior for installations and camera positioning. | Every PTZ function works on every controller. |
| Related device support | Better interoperability possibilities for nearby chime and intercom functions. | Any uncertified device is universally compatible. |
Matter versus Thread: the difference
Matter is an application-level interoperability standard: it defines device models, commands and behavior so supported smart-home products can work across compatible ecosystems. Thread is a low-power mesh-networking technology commonly used by some Matter devices. Matter can also operate over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, so Thread is not a requirement for every Matter-certified product.
A Thread border router bridges the Thread network with the wider IP network. It does not by itself make a non-Matter device compatible with Matter. Likewise, a product using Thread might not expose a Matter application interface. Look for the exact certifications rather than just a Thread or Matter wordmark in a listing.
What Matter 1.5 added before the 1.5.1 refinement
The November 2025 Matter 1.5 specification introduced categories and functions including cameras, closures, soil sensors and additional energy-management capabilities. Matter 1.5.1 focuses more narrowly on refining camera behavior and flexibility. This chronology matters: a news story that describes cameras as brand-new in March 2026 misses the earlier expansion.
How to check compatibility before buying
Confirm the exact model number and certification on the vendor's support page.
Check whether the function you need is supported by your ecosystem controller, not only in a specification.
Verify minimum firmware, required hub hardware and whether a Thread border router is needed.
Check which features require an account, cloud connectivity or ongoing fee.
Confirm support for multi-admin sharing before expecting simultaneous control by different ecosystems.
For existing equipment, take an inventory first. A hub, a doorbell and a battery sensor can all use different transports and firmware schedules. Updating a device on installation day without a rollback plan can interrupt important automations.
Privacy and safety considerations
Camera interoperability is only one part of a security evaluation. Review who can access video, where recordings are stored, whether remote access is enabled, how updates are delivered and who manages family permissions. The technical specification does not replace the vendor's privacy policy or long-term security support commitment.

Frequently asked questions
Does Matter 1.5.1 mean every smart camera works with every smart-home app? No. Device certification, controller support, firmware and implemented features still determine compatibility.
Is Thread the same thing as Matter? No. Thread is a networking layer; Matter defines interoperable device behavior over supported IP networks.
Do I need a Thread border router for every Matter product? No. Matter devices may use Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread, depending on the model.
Should I replace a working hub because the specification changed? Not automatically. Check which missing feature actually affects your use case and whether existing hardware can support it.
