NYC Marathon Qualifying Times: 2027 Standards and Entry Rules

Understand the qualifying time standards for the 2027 New York City Marathon and which race times count.

NYC Marathon Qualifying Times: 2027 Standards and Entry Rules

Updated November 1, 2026 • U.S. English • Editorial draft

The 2027 TCS New York City Marathon uses qualifying performances achieved January 1–December 31, 2026. There is not one universal cutoff: the required time changes with a runner’s age and gender category, and the entry rules differ for NYRR races and non-NYRR marathons. NYRR evaluates net (chip) time, not gun time. These are the published standards as checked November 1, 2026; entry periods and policies may change.

2027 NYC Marathon qualifying times by age

The table summarizes NYRR’s published standards. The age group is determined by your age on November 7, 2027, the scheduled 2027 race date. The half-marathon column applies only to eligible NYRR half-marathons; it is not a qualification route through an independently organized half-marathon.

The crucial difference: qualifying at an NYRR event vs. another marathon

Meeting a time standard at an eligible in-person NYRR marathon or NYRR half-marathon in the window generally provides non-complimentary guaranteed entry, subject to NYRR’s official rules and claim procedures. Race results completed at NYRR events are reflected in your NYRR dashboard. You still need to claim the place when NYRR opens the appropriate period and pay the entry fee.

If you run a certified full marathon organized outside NYRR, you can submit a qualifying result during NYRR’s separate non-NYRR application period. This is not guaranteed entry: NYRR limits places and selects the fastest applicants within age and gender categories when demand exceeds capacity. A certified, independently organized half-marathon does *not* qualify under the non-NYRR route.

NYRR has not announced a definitive 2027 non-NYRR application window on the cited standards page as of this review. Avoid treating an earlier year’s deadline as the 2027 deadline. For specific gender-category transitions, nonbinary registration details, and athlete-with-disability pathways, follow the current official policy rather than assuming every case fits the summary table.

How to check whether your qualifying time counts

Identify the age group you will be in on November 7, 2027, not the age you were when you set the time.

Confirm whether the result came from an eligible NYRR race or from a certified non-NYRR full marathon.

Compare your official chip time to the published standard for your posted result category.

Make sure the result occurred within January 1–December 31, 2026, and can be verified online if required.

Watch the NYRR dashboard and entry announcements for the claim or application period; meeting a benchmark alone does not submit your registration.

A time of 2:54:00, for example, misses the men’s 18–34 marathon standard of 2:53:00 but meets the men’s 35–39 standard of 2:55:00. Which one applies depends on age on 2027 race day. Similarly, a half-marathon finish can be excellent yet ineligible for this program if it was not earned at an accepted NYRR race.

What this guide does not cover

This page is about time qualification for the 2027 marathon, not the 2026 lottery. For the separate application history, see NYC Marathon Lottery 2026. To understand the shorter race distance, see How Many Miles Is a Half Marathon?

Frequently asked questions

Do I qualify for New York with a half-marathon time?

Only if the half-marathon is an eligible NYRR event and you meet the relevant age/category standard in the 2026 qualifying window. A non-NYRR half-marathon does not qualify through the outside-race program.

Is the 2027 NYC Marathon qualifying time based on chip time?

Yes. NYRR evaluates net time, also called chip time, rather than the elapsed gun time.

Can a qualifying time from a non-NYRR race guarantee entry?

No. Outside-marathon qualifiers compete for a limited number of spots; meeting the published standard allows an application but does not assure selection.

When do I apply for 2027?

NYRR lists certain 2027 claim and non-NYRR application dates as to be determined. Verify the published dates before taking action.
