Oura Ring Without a Subscription: What Still Works

Information checked: November 1, 2026

You can keep using a newer Oura Ring without an active membership, but its app becomes substantially more limited. Oura's current membership policy says users without a paid plan can view the three daily scores for Readiness, Activity and Sleep, the ring battery level, basic profile information, app settings and Explore content. Detailed charts and personalized guidance require membership. Oura Generation 2 is the major exception: it does not require that recurring subscription.

What stays available without a plan

For Gen 3 and newer rings, Oura lists the three headline scores and limited account functions as available without membership. That may be enough for a person who only glances at a summary. It is not the same as receiving detailed sleep-stage analysis, long-term interpretation and full personalized insights. The company also states that the API is unavailable to Gen 3 and newer users without active membership, although personal data can still be downloaded through the Membership Hub.

Why Gen 2 is different

Oura continues to describe Gen2 as not requiring membership fees. However, the older hardware does not support every feature introduced for more recent devices. A used Gen2 may appear inexpensive over several years, but battery health, app compatibility and product support matter. Do not assume purchasing a legacy ring will grant all the new software features without a subscription.

Estimate total cost before buying

Calculate the ring's price and likely membership charges across the years you expect to keep it. Confirm current pricing in your country and whether a free trial applies. It can be cheaper to pay for a model with a strong app experience if that information truly changes your habits; conversely, a no-fee alternative may fit someone who only wants simple sleep and pulse trends. Avoid relying on a monthly price quoted in an old review.

Decide if limited scores are enough

Think about which screens you have actually used during a normal week. If all your decisions depend on a headline Readiness score, limited mode might be acceptable. If you regularly inspect temperature deviations, training history or detailed sleep trends, check how the loss of a subscription affects that workflow. Review privacy and export controls before changing plans, especially if you have accumulated years of data.
