The Walking Dead Universe: Series, Spin-Offs and Viewing Guide

What counts as The Walking Dead universe

The Walking Dead began as AMC's survival-horror series about Rick Grimes and the people trying to rebuild society after an outbreak. The original drama ran for 11 seasons, ending in November 2022. The wider franchise includes companion series, character-focused continuations, anthologies, comics and games, but these are not interchangeable. A search for 'how many series of Walking Dead' usually asks about television programs, not the number of comic volumes or individual seasons.

The main show versus the companion shows

Fear the Walking Dead starts with another group and eventually includes familiar characters. World Beyond examines a younger generation and the Civic Republic's sphere of influence. Tales of the Walking Dead tells independent anthology stories. The Ones Who Live centers on Rick and Michonne; Daryl Dixon follows Daryl and Carol abroad; Dead City follows Maggie and Negan in Manhattan. Each has a separate title and episode list, rather than being counted as Season 12 of the original series.

Where a newcomer should begin

For the clearest introduction, start with the 2010 pilot and continue through the main series in broadcast order. That establishes the rules of walkers, the major alliances, and the relationships on which character spin-offs rely. Viewers who primarily want Rick's reunion may jump to The Ones Who Live, but important emotional details will land differently without the original series. Fear can also be watched on its own for much of its early run.

How to keep series counts current

Franchise counts change when networks launch a new title, but a new season of Daryl Dixon or Dead City does not automatically mean a new separate series. AMC's 2026 rights announcement identified six spin-off series alongside the original program. Check official show pages for new announcements and use one consistent counting rule: count distinct scripted television titles, then list the seasons within each title separately.

What is not included in a series count

The comics and licensed video games use related material but are separate media. A new season of an existing spin-off increases its episode total without increasing the number of individual television titles. Publicity may use the phrase “The Walking Dead Universe” as an umbrella brand, so always inspect the full program name before recording an episode number or premiere date. A sensible directory records a show’s title, first year, current status and characters, with separate pages for its individual seasons.
