The Walking Dead Season 1 Cast: Actors and Characters
Actors at the center of the pilot
Andrew Lincoln plays Rick Grimes, Jon Bernthal plays Shane Walsh, Sarah Wayne Callies plays Lori Grimes and Chandler Riggs plays Carl. Their relationships form the emotional core of the first six episodes. Lennie James also makes a memorable early appearance as Morgan Jones, who meets Rick shortly after he awakens, but it would be misleading to describe Morgan as present throughout the entire first season.
The camp and Atlanta survivors
Steven Yeun portrays Glenn Rhee; Laurie Holden plays Andrea; Jeffrey DeMunn is Dale Horvath; Melissa McBride is Carol Peletier; IronE Singleton is T-Dog; Emma Bell plays Amy; and Michael Rooker plays Merle Dixon. Norman Reedus portrays Daryl Dixon, whose introduction adds tension with other survivors. These names answer the cast-identification intent more directly than a general recap of why Rick went into Atlanta.
Guest roles and billing differences
Noah Emmerich portrays CDC scientist Edwin Jenner, whose role is central late in the season. Episodes also include guest characters encountered during supply missions. A cast database may distinguish starring, recurring and guest billing; that hierarchy can change by source and episode. For strict credits, use the episode's end credits rather than a modern promotional image containing people who joined in later seasons.
How to identify the right actor
The safest lookup pairs three things: character name, actor and Season 1 scene or episode. For instance, Shane is Rick's partner before the outbreak, while Glenn assists a stranded Rick in Atlanta. This page is a cast reference; the companion Season 1 article covers the narrative and finale in detail. Do not add later-season performers to this list simply because they became franchise icons.
Why actor searches can be confusing
A list of all Walking Dead stars often includes Danai Gurira, Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but they were not among Season 1’s credited characters. Conversely, a significant Season 1 guest such as Noah Emmerich may receive little attention on an all-series promotional poster. To answer casting questions, check the first six episodes and distinguish one-time guests from people who anchor the survivor camp. Actor names are factual credits; plot interpretations belong in the separate story guide.
